How to Send and Receive Texts on Your Chromebook

If you use both a Chromebook and an Android phone, you don't have to keep switching between devices to send texts. Chrome OS has a built-in feature that syncs your phone's messages to your laptop through Google's Messages app.
Here's how to set it up and start texting from your Chromebook.
What You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have:
- A Chromebook running Chrome OS version 71 or later
- An Android phone running Android 5.1 or higher
- The latest version of Google Messages installed on your phone
- Both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network (for initial setup)
Connect Your Phone to Your Chromebook
First, you need to establish a connection between your devices. If your phone is already connected to your Chromebook, you can skip to the next section.
- Open Settings on your Chromebook
- Select "Connected devices" from the left sidebar
- Check if your phone appears under "Connected devices" at the top
If your phone isn't listed:
- Select "Setup" to add a new device
- Your phone should appear under "Device detected" if both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
- Select "Accept and continue"
- Enter your Google account password when prompted
- Select "Done"
Your phone is now connected to your Chromebook.
Set Messages as Your Default SMS App
Before you can sync messages, you need to confirm that Google Messages is your default texting app on your Android phone.
On your phone:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap "Apps and notifications"
- Tap the "Advanced" dropdown menu
- Select "Default apps"
- Check that "Messages" is listed as your default SMS app
- If it's not, tap "SMS app" and select "Messages"
Enable Messages on Your Chromebook
Now you're ready to sync your messages.
- Go back to your Chromebook's Connected devices settings
- Select the right arrow next to your connected phone
- Select "Setup" next to Messages
This will display a QR code on your Chromebook screen.
Scan the QR Code
The final step connects Messages on your phone to your Chromebook.
On your phone:
- Open the Messages app
- Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner
- Select "Messages for web"
- Tap "QR code scanner"
- Point your camera at the QR code displayed on your Chromebook
After the scan completes, the Messages app will open on your Chromebook, showing all your existing conversations.
Test It Out
You can now send and receive texts directly from your Chromebook. Any messages you send or receive will sync between your phone and laptop automatically.
Your conversation history stays in sync, so you can start a conversation on one device and continue it on the other without missing anything.
The Bottom Line
Texting from your Chromebook is straightforward once you've completed the initial setup. You won't need to repeat these steps unless you disconnect your phone or switch devices.
This feature works best when you're already working on your Chromebook and don't want to keep picking up your phone. It's particularly useful if your phone is charging in another room or if you prefer typing on a full keyboard.
Keep in mind that your phone still needs to have an active connection for messages to sync. If your phone is off or out of range, you won't be able to send or receive texts from your Chromebook.
